Question:

How hard is it to tear down a pool?

I am looking at buying a used 4ft x 18ft above ground pool. It has been setup where it is for maybe 20 years. I am going to look at it today. If anyone has ever took one down and set it back up any advice is helpful. Also what is an expected yearly cost to maintain a pool for chemicals? How long is a liner normally good for?

  1. hard

  2. 20 years? I'd avoid it. You can count on one expense right off the bat. The liner. Next up would be the bottom of the walls and the bottom rail. They're made of cheap galvanized and that's the area you can expect them to rust out. When you take down that wall ( assuming you manage to get the nuts and bolts free where the ends meet), you'd need to have a number of hands there to pull the wall out of the rail and carefully roll it if it actually is still in one piece. How about the filter and pump? They still functioning? There's just so much to be careful with here that it probably isn't worth your time and money and buying a new one isn't all that expensive in this size range.

  3. It's a relatively small pool. About three years ago we took down a 24ft pool and put it up. Make sure you have a lot of extra screws and bolts.

the cost of the chemicals is about $100. a season

The liner for mine was $200.00 I'm sure yours will be cheaper. A liner should last you about 7 years.

Good luck I hope you have a lot of patience. It's a nice luxury but it's a lot of work.

  4. I've disassembled one that was 10 years old. They should be paying you to remove it...it's worth nothing. If there are bands underneath the pool they may be pretty much shot, or does it have buttresses? Either way any parts that were ground level or below have to be corroded or rusted. You're gonna have difficulty removing the screws and bolts to say the least. How old is the liner?
