If I wanted to ride my mountain bike to school and back as a way to get fit and save money, how fast would it where out my tires? I guess the question is, on a decent set of mt bike tires, how many miles can you get on the road?

  1. Very hard, if you are cycling on the road all the time you would be better getting slicks from your local bike shop. You won't beleive the difference it makes.

  2. I wouldn't worry about the tire wear but do it just to get fit and save gas money.  When your mtb tires wear out simply buy some slicks for you mtb and enjoy your increased fitness.

  3. It is harder on you than on the tires. This week I've seen slick tires that fit 26 inch mountain rims on sale for $6 each. It takes just a few minutes to change tires once you get the hang of it. You also might be able to get a second set of really cheap wheels. Use the slicks for riding to school. Keep your knobbies for off-road cycling.
