How hard is to legally change your last name?

I have a long polish last name and no one can ever get it.

  1. It's very easy. You file at the county clerk's court office. They require that your request be published in a public paper for 4-6 weeks. Then it goes to court. It is granted by the judge, assuming nothing illegal is going on at your end. Then you use the court order to change your name to go get your new driver's license and other legal documents.


  2. It depends on which state you live in. In California it could simply be a matter of using the new name and abandoning the old. No court paperwork necessary.

  3. Not hard at all - it's just a matter of filling out a form and appearing in court for about 2 1/2 minutes.
