Could this be done with normal AA batteries and some components bought from Maplins?

Are there any simple or easy to follow online tutorials that will help me to complete this task?

  1. This will save you time and money:-

I have one for my Archos 705 media player, gives me about 2 hours operation.

  2. Get a battery case from maplins for 4 X AA batteries and use rechargeable NiMh cells, these are 1.2- 1.3 volts so will be about the 5 volts that you need.

  3. normal AA batteries are 1.5 volts each so 5 v will be impossible to attain , you will get 4.5v with 3 batteries and 6v with 4 batteries. go to maplins and see what they can do for you, they are very helpful.Or try a model shop, they have all sorts of rechargeable battery packs.

  4. get a Yuasa battery from Maplins

connect to a LM317 or 7805 or LM 338 based regulator circuit

what current do you want to use?

    peak current?

    heatsinking?

    rechargeable?

    current slew rate?

    stability?

you could work out a "factor of merit" for the different Yuasa types, i.e. joules/£ for example
