  1. Agriculture leads the way into the development of England (other countries as well). As agriculture grew, industry grew, and England grew and prospered. Rail roads and highways and other forms of transportation follow. As England has matured as a nation, it faces a problem of industry leading the way at the expense of agriculture. New industry, cities, roads, airports, more people and more homes all built on former agriculture land. Agriculture no longer leads the way, but struggles to keep up with the growing population and industry. There has to be a balance between agriculture and industry, because when agriculture can no longer feed and cloth it's people, agriculture will lead in the decline of England. You asked about England, but the same applies to most nations.

I have to disagree that agriculture is the same from nation to nation. While "the luck of the draw of nature" plays a big role in the development of agriculture, what a country does with that draw is what counts. Take Israel and Syria for example, They both got pretty much the same draw in nature, mostly desert, While one nation is starving the other has developed it's agriculture to the best in the world. Israel not only feeds it's own people, but exports a large amount of it's produce. Travel to any "third world" or underdeveloped country and you will find underdeveloped agriculture. Most still using the slash and burn agriculture.

  2. I don't know how far back you want to go, but think about it this way.  Nomadic people are always on the move, following the herds they prey on.  Agriculture allows people to stay put and call one place their home.  This allows them to build permanent structures that will last for many years.  Prosperous agriculture gives people free time which they can devote to things like art, literature, architecture and so on.  Staying put probably also leads to a more territorial nature in people.  Nomads can just move on to somewhere else while people in permanent situations must defend their property, crops, animals, etc.

  3. Like all nations, agriculture played on of the largest roles in development. But let me ask you this. What has the climate and weather had to do with how that country has prospered agriculturally? Considering that agricultural practices are all pretty much the same from one country to another (no big secrets in farming, not like nuclear science) why does a country like England and all the Isles do well where another which has poor soil and limited rain seem to be on the edge of poverty and always find war at her doorstep? P.S. Yes the answer is in the question. The luck of Nature's draw?
