  1. Who?

  2. Your question  asks about the world. Since XM only covers the US and Canada, you have to include both Sirius and WorldSpace (which serves many other countries than XM and Sirius) to get a world view of satellite radio - the medium.

XM, in combination with Sirius and WorldSpace has given much of the world a new medium to receive audio programming, in competition with traditional terrestrial radio. In addition, other methods of audio delivery such as cell phones, MP3 and other players (like iPods), Internet radio, HD radio and others, all have been introduced within the last ten years. Eventually many of these new delivery methods will take on other roles as they begin to use other channels available to them to deliver other types of information that are not necessarily entertainment based.

In essence and relative importance, the only effect on THE WORLD is that which is mentioned above.

It's not like nor comparable to each religion's founding figure or figurehead (Jesus, Moses, Mohammed and others). It hasn't the impact of an Abraham Lincoln; women's suffrage; Rosa Parks, Dr. King and others who fought and finally won civil rights for all people in the US; not Nelson Mandela in South Africa; nor 9/11 which the world takes a moment to remember today.

It's not the internal combustion engine, nor the wheel nor the harnessing of electricity.

We have an expression in our business that we use when we're feeling too self-important, "...it's just the radio."

    I think that applies here.

    Interesting question.

  3. While I'm addicted to it, I didn't realized and don't believe that it has impacted the world.

  4. Yes It has a large impact on the world, terrestrial radio can't beat xm which that is a small impact on them.

But they are only available in the US And Canada!

  5. It hasn't "impacted the world" at all, as it's only available in the USA and Canada.

I believe that market penetration in the US for XM radio is only about 4 to 5% - with lower figures for Canada.

Digital radio (DAB) is being rolled out globally, and has been available in the UK for at least two or three years.  It provides superb quality, allows for additional information across the airwaves, has opened up numerous additional broadcasting licences ... and best of all it's free.

Given all of this, and the increasing convergence of entertainment technology, I doubt XM radio will prove anywhere near successful enough to "impact the world".

  6. I used to be an over the road truck driver. It's been quite a long time ago.Back than, there wasn't such a thing.I sure wish there was.It was very irritating to loose a good station five minutes after I found it on the dial. So,for people that drive all over this wonderful country,it's a good thing.Other than that, people that live in remote places can now enjoy whatever programing they chose. But i can't see paying for radio when it's free from local stations.
