The biggest change is accurate typing and matching. Since we now know what types are needed, it helps identify what donors are needed. Many large hospitals put a mini-ad on their newsletters, "we need Type A blood."

Also, it has become much safer, since there is no chance of getting infected since all supplies are sterile.

It is basically the same except they test the blood more.  I suspect they test everyone for HIV, certrain STDs,  and other blood borne pathogens.  The screening and questions they ask is much more detailed.
