  1. Like the folks who gather around the flag of their fathers. We should have a flag for community service, so we can acknowledge that we are of the same mind. One carries away a feeling of getting out and giving up our desires for the opportunity to help others when they may not know how exactly to do it themselves and we do. Becoming successful or not, is when others know of your previous experiences and is always helpful.

  2. It can help you find your passion, so that you know where your strengths lie when it comes time to find a paying job. If you are employed in an area that you love, you will be "successful."

I don't know who the author is, but I love this quote: "If you love what you do, then you never have to work a day in your life."

  3. I did it for three months and it gives you a good sense of pride and self worth . And it also looks good on your resume. It depends on where you do it but you might learn and meet different kinds of people you wouldn't normally meet. I would still do it if time permitted me too.

    Good luck

  4. I don't know about more successful but I do believe in the whole 'give and you shall receive' concept. Did you ever hear the quote... "there was a man, they called him mad, the more he gave, the more he had"? I believe and have experienced that what ever you give in life comes back to you 10 fold.

  5. It very much depends on what you mean by "successful". If by that you mean "wealthy" then perhaps not, but if you mean that one can make a good living, or find a good job as a result, yes.

It also depends what kind of charity work you undertake. The brunt of voluntary workers in charity shops are either unemployed or retired. Those who are unemployed usually move on into jobs as they have demonstrated initiative, selflessness, punctuality and reliability. They also acquire skills in various areas which they may not have had before and gained assurance as well as interpersonal skills. Those that have managerial ability and join as area managers can go a long way and eventually can command high salaries when they are on the upper echelons. They may then chose to move to other sectors where their experience will be an advantage in their favour and allow them to rise even higher in business or industry.

For young people VSO is always a recommendation and those who do this rarely fail to find good jobs afterwards as it shows real guts and they will have gained unique experience in difficult situations as well as demonstrated some of the qualities desccribed above.

Whichever way you look at it, those who undertake charity work  are adding to their CV by acquiring experience, and it increases their sense of satisfaction at having done something positive rather than procrastinating, mooning about , or doing mundane tasks at home rather than going out and facing the world.
