  1. They have enabled globalisation, transportation (aircraft) information exchange, enabled democratic freedoms due to free exchange of ideas, configured logistics such as organising complex systems such as air traffic control and economic databases.

The downside is that it is very easy for corrupt and totalitarian governments to spy on its citizens and swap unconfirmed suspicions about people with other corrupt governments. Net neutrality all the way!

  2. Wonder if the rise in obesity is anything to do with kids being stuck in front of a computer? We now have the capacity to collect and process more data than before, or ever seemed to need before. We wouldn't have call centres or junk mail or spam.  Despite the advances in technology, most offices are no more efficient than they were thirty years ago. It is significant that the first thing that the guy called in to sort out the Sydney Olympics did was to ban e-mail.

  3. The question is basically asking what things can you do with a computer that you would normally not be able to do without one.

For starters, asking for help here.

  4. * improved communication among the world's population, not just the governments. feels more like a global neighborhood :)

       * people have the ability to sell/trade items without taxes

       * eyewitness news accounts can be immediately posted

          without censorship

       * visual, written and oral communication can happen

         without being controlled by corporations

       * People can post alternative thoughts, beliefs and

         images

       * Learning is not confined to just a classroom, internet travelers can research and learn on a global scale

Technology is growing in scope, and shrinking in size

       *  Innovations and improvements in both technology itself

and the size of the items being produced

These are some of the ideas that came first to mind... hope it helps

  5. In 1958 a computer filled a room, they were only affordable to governments and universities.

Early space flight happened with out them.

Nuclear reactors and atomic bombs were designed with out them.

Trains ran on time, stuff was manufactured and shipped around the world with out them, television and videos could both work with out computers. Most things in the modern world would probably still be here with out computers.

Other than obviously computers themselves, most of the current home entertainment (other than tv radio and videos that use magnetic tape)

    Mobile phones.

Most things would probably be bulkier and less affordable

Going back beyond the 50 year mark, there wouldn't be any jews ( blacks hispanics gypsies etc) in the modern world and we would all speak either german or japaness as one of the earliest (electronic) computers was used to crack the enigma codes so the allies, knew in advance most of the axis plans in WWII.
