How has teaching impacted your life?

I really want to be a Biology teacher. I just want to know some real pros and cons of the profession. I really want to know how teaching has impacted your life...how has your teaching impacted your student's life?

My biggest issue with teaching bio is that I teach in a state where the students have no rights when it comes to dissections. Students should not be forced to dissect and every teacher should offer every student an alternative assignment using models or computers. If you are lucky enough to teach in a state that has a law regarding student choice.

I am often asked about the students I impact and the truth is, as a teacher you will not reach every student. There will be one or two that you really connect with each year and there will be one or two that you are at odds with all year long.

On the good side, I am able to do professional development on summer break and relax a little. I enjoy doing something different each day and having control over what that something is.

On the negative side, 10 months of my year require working 8 hours a day then coming home to do more planning and grading every night. I usually take Saturdays off but spend most of the day Sunday getting ready for the week.

Good luck with your decision and know that the world needs some very dedicated teachers during a time when many are leaving the field due to disillusionment. Be sure to visit many, many classrooms before making a final decision.

well what i love about teaching is that you know your make a difference in their lives and their careers its more exiting when they come back to you and thank you, its the greatest feeling. i dont regret teaching other students.
