How has the Tour De France route changed over the years?

I am looking for a map overlay showing the different routes throughout history. Couldn't find one.....

  1. Yep, That could be hard to locate. the route is different every year. Many single stages are the same or similar, but there are always new routes and variations on the ones they use numerous times. The only thing consistent is the finish line.


  2. One of the biggest changes between the early days of the Tour and post WWII, other than the obvious ones of road conditions, equipment, and support, is the length of the individual stages. In the early days of the Tour the stages tended to be much longer than they are now. It was not unusual to have stages of 250 miles. Nowadays the longest stages are only about 150 miles.
