  1. Well the UN has had difficulty in the past two decades really accomplishing anything. It can't do much in Darfur, because it can invade sovreignty, the Iraq Oil-for-food program became corrupt and superflous. And the peacekeepers aahave caused more s*x scandals than protecting civilians. The UN was meant to be a global forum for global discussion, and help to prevent another world war. It has established the Declaration of Human Rights, passed several resolutions stopping open arms races in outer space, and even has passed a resolution on Nuclear nonproliferation, unfortunatly, most of these resolutions have been disregarded. Iran and north korea are still developing nuclear weapons, and Sudan and China are still committing human rights abuses. So alhtough the UN has attempted to help the world, their improvements have not helped us that mush.

The General Assembly are the committees in the UN, like ECOSOC or Legal Commitee, that all UN members nations can be participating members in. It is not rotational, and all nations are supposed to have equal seating. (But most of the time power is split between the perm 5)

The Security Council is the most powerful council in the UN. It is made up of the permenant 5 security council nations- US, UK, China, Russia, and France. These 5 nations hold veto power. So if one of these nations does not like a resolution, it can veto it, and it atomatically fails.  And there are also 10 non-permenant members of security council. These are the current nonpermenant members--

    Belgium (2008)

    Indonesia (2008)

    South Africa (2008)

    Burkina Faso (2009)

    Italy (2008)

    Viet Nam (2009)

    Costa Rica (2009)

    Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (2009)

    Croatia (2009)

    Panama (2008)

These 10 seats on security council rotate between all the other GA nations. Membership  on this committee for non-permenant nations is two years. These 10 nations have no veto power.

The presidency of the Security Council is a one month term position, and it goes in alphabetical order by country name.
