Question:

How has the gas price changed you?

I for one will admit, I was driving a vehicle with pathetic MPG and now feel guilty about it. I also feel kind of dumb when I think about how much I was wasting on gas. The past few weeks, I have left my V10 Excursion at home, succumbed to the embarrassment of borrowing my father's 90's Accord Coupe and am searching for an Accord to call my own. I also drive a lot slower and eat Maruchan Instant Lunch at work instead going to the drive thru. How have the fuel prices changed you? What have you done to counter act?

  1. I bought a 08 Civic, the way i drive it gets me 35mpg. So i don't really cut back on trips that much, because i don't really burn that much in gas. I bought it as long term car, i plan on keeping for many years and then passing it down, and with gas prices the way they are, i'm happy i did. Fill ups cost sometimes half of what my other cars are and it gets me the same if not more miles on a tank. Before i bought the Civic i was driving a turbo 98 Prelude, which got me about 16mpg, still have that car, but don't drive it too much. We have a 07 Honda Odyssey which costs about $90 to fill up with about 22mpg, its sad. I wonder how much your excursion costs to fill up, and how many mpg's you get...wow the bad thing is, you won't even get anything for it if you trade it in, dealers don't want a car of that size and with a V10?!

  2. Actually, I haven't really made any changes to my lifestyle due to increasing gas prices.

  3. Now I know what it feels like to be broke.

  4. I got lucky back in March and scored a job in downtown Toronto that forced me to take public transit because of the ridiculous parking prices there. Since then, I've been filling up my Civic (which i recommend over an Accord...smaller engine and frame that's easier to maneuver) once or twice a month.

  5. We plan our trips, but one of the economy cars broke down and now 4people share 3 cars...1 is a truck,1 an SUV(older) and one is the economy car...whoever drives the furthest drive the economy car. We want to buy a scooter for that driver so we can us it for the next distance driver but ,catch 22, can't afford a scooter because don't have $ right now because of increase in gas. We don't visit family 40miles away; don't run to store if we forget something, don't go to the doctor as we probably should, bag lunches more.  Even thought of calling our road side service the day I had less than a 1/4 gas; call from work, have it towed or have them put enought gas in it to get me home til I had the cash for gas. Wish I could afford to get car fixed and a scooter.

  6. They have made me angry and discouraged with this country with the fat cat oil companies ruling the world (and having all the politicians in their pockets).  I don't go anywhere I don't need to go.  I take my wife to work, drive back and forth to the office, to the store, and that's it.  I will not go on any trips, go out of town, or anywhere I absolutely don't need to.  I consider driving a car now as a necessity only and not something I will do for leisure.  I still use a tank of gas a week though ($50) so they still get me.  But if gas hits $6, I am trading my car in and buying a Hybrid.  I am planning a vacation late this year, but I'm taking a plane, and use cabs (overseas).  With the price of jet fuel on the rise though, who knows how long even airfare will be affordable?

  7. I combine all my errands in one trip and usually that will be after I get off work so I don't have to drive back to town just for that. I drive a 6 cyl. Grand Prix GT (25 MPG) so I am now looking for a smaller 4 cyl. car that  gets better MPG. Since I spend more on gas I take my lunch to work instead of buying from who ever is catering each day. We rent videos or watch movies on cable instead of going out every Saturday night. We have a garden and I have been cooking fresh veggies and also putting some away in the freezer for later.

  8. I used to have a truck and gas held me back from traveling where I wanted. I've have now gotten a new car with better gas mileage.

  9. I have a v8 titan...that is the only thing i can have at the moment....and its utterly draining me. It costs me 100$ a week just to go to work far be it for me to have to drive anyplace else. I'm going to try to quit smoking because smoking and gas is just not gonna work. So maybe thats a good thing.

  10. I bought a toyota yaris.

I feel much better now, thanks.

( when you are doing all you can, the stress disappears. you really can't complain about gas and MPG, you are doing all you can about it. )

The old car was a 92 accord exi coupe, not a gas guzzler but the yaris beats it by a mile in MPG.

  11. I now drive a lot like a little old lady. I try to limit my RPMs below 2000 in the city and 2500 on the highway. That, with other methods, I have raised my mileage by roughly 80% (18 EPA to 23 actual city and 29 EPA to 34 actual highway). I also time when I accelearate, how much and when I let off the gas so that I have to use the brake as little as possible so that I do not waste momentum.

Also, I never go in the drive though at a fast food joint or idle in a parking lot when I can help it.

Luckily my parents traded in my dad's 02 Suburban right before gas hit $4

  12. its gotten me angry at libs who dont have any knowlege of oil biz...everyone needs to read The Prize.
