  1. are you in an academy or taking a law/ethics class? (i remember this type of question from my academy days).

Studies have shown that women have less complaints of excessive force complaints against them then their male counterparts.  women are also more likely to try to talk their way thru a situation, rather than fight their way thru it. (yes, there are exceptions to all of these!). (= decreased hosp/work.comp bills)

because women "generally" have more empathy, they will frequently do better in assault/abuse situations when dealing with the victim.  some people will find it easier to discuss the situation with a woman.

on the negative side some people will have less respect for a woman, thinking that police work is "men's work" and that they are not tough enough to do the job.  they may try to run or fight because they think they will be able to intimidate their way out of the situation.  some ethnic groups will only deal with men.  some women may be more trusting or less nosy/less willing to dig into a situation and may not get the truth of the situation.

i think society in general is happy with the integration of women into policing.  we are at a time where we want to se all shapes and sizes/colors in every facet of life.  i think some people are not sure, and there are definately some people who dont agree, but honestly i've never had anyone really disrespect me as a female officer.  i do occasionally get someone who thinks they can intimidate me, but i'm not easily intimidated so not really a problem for me.
