  1. Well, beyond what happened 100 years ago, the invention of the airplane has greatly shaped today.  I mean, beyond air travel and air transportation (of goods, mail, etc), just think about 9/11.  How much has our history been shaped by that one day that was quintessentially caused by airplanes?

I mean, granted, if there were no airplanes we probably wouldn't have pissed off the Taliban to begin with... or, at least, not pissed them off as much.  But one invention can have major ripples...

Personally, I live 6 hours (by car) to my closest relative, and 14 hours (by car) from my only sister.  Without planes, I'm not sure I would see my family as often as I do.

  2. It vastly changed the scope of transportation.  No longer would the hurdles of land or sea be a challenge or hindrance on time by carrying people and cargo in the sky without the need of slow balloons, blimps  or dirigibles..
