  1. The State of Origin rules have always been the rules that the Australian Rugby League (ARL) used for their competitions.

In the old days, these rules were different to the International rules used when playing international matches.  In some year, as Australia were continually being beaten by teams at international level, as we (the Australians) could not adapt to the International rules, the ARL implemented the International rules as the rules for Australia.

So the rules have changed from normal Australian rules to the International rules, and the updates made to these International rules over the years.

    Some rules changes would be:

    (1) No contests in the scrum

    (2) Scrum moved in to 20 metres from sideline, instead of just 10 metres.

    (3) The off side rule moved from 5 metres to 10 metres

The equipment changes would probably be the better construction of shoulder padding and gear, introduction of kicking tees (where the ball is kicked from instead of a pile of sand), head gear.  Of course the fabric of the jerseys, socks, shorts are made of a better material.  The padding around the goal posts.

  2. Just adding to Jacks answer. The ball is no longer leather. The ball is now synthetic, supposedly non-slip.
