How have Mercedes GP fared in the 2011 Formula 1 season so far?
The 2011 Formula 1 season is heating up with every passing race. While some of the top teams of the sport are battling it out there, others are following closely behind.
In the ongoing 2011 Formula 1 season so far, Mercedes GP have failed to achieve a single podium finish so far.
After six rounds of the season, both of their drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg are still busy struggling to finish on podium.
Mercedes GP introduced MGP-W02 car for this year with hopes of getting excellent results from the drivers. However, the team could not take a strong start to the ongoing season due to some technical issues with their machines.
They had a positive 2011 pre-season test session. Michael Schumacher successfully ended the winter testing by finishing his Barcelona test run in the top spot. But things changed when the season began.
Mercedes took part in the season opener Australian Grand Prix with hopes of winning the race in Melbourne. However, both of their drivers could not even finish the first race of the 2011 season. Schumacher had to retire from the race while Rosberg suffered
an accident and was ruled out as well.
After a very disappointing start to the season, the team worked hard for the next Malaysian Grand Prix. Their hard work paid off as both of their drivers finished in 9th and 10th positions in Kuala Lumpur.
The seven-time world champion Schumacher seemed to be improving in the next Chinese Grand Prix, as he took an eighth place finish for the team. His teammate Rosberg had a trouble free race and finished his run in the fifth spot. The team was quite happy
with the German’s performance.
In the next Turkish Grand Prix, the team had a fuel consumption issue and due to that, the 42-year-old driver again failed to deliver against the stronger rivals of Formula 1 and finished the race in the 12th place. Meanwhile, his teammate Rosberg
really struggled throughout the race and after starting from 3rd place on the grid, finished in the fifth spot.
In the Spanish Grand Prix, Rosberg’s performance declined and he finished his run in seventh spot just behind his teammate Schumacher, who finished sixth.
Despite having an unsatisfied race weekend in Spain, Mercedes decided to deliver new upgrades to the MGP-W02 car for the Monaco Grand Prix.
However, after struggling in the race, Schumacher had to retire from the race when his car stopped at the pit lane entrance. The team’s second driver, Rosberg also could not impress and finished in eleventh spot for Mercedes.
After six rounds of the 2011 Formula 1 season, Mercedes stand at fifth place in the constructors’ championship with 40 points.
Nico Rosberg is in seventh position in the drivers’ championship with 26 points, while his teammate Schumacher is in the 11th position with 14 points.
Mercedes GP’s performance in the 2011 season so far has showed that they have a potential to fight the top runners of ongoing season. Let’s see if they manage to do that in the remainder of the term.
