I don't need the exact numbers, just a rough number is enough.

  1. Typical freight trains (in the us) have max (legal) speed of 72 mph.  This is the speed that the locomotive will take over, and make a penalty application of the entire trains brakes.

The fastest posted speed limit that I am aware of is 70 mph.

The fastest that I have travelled was 58 mph on a loaded coal train going downhill (getting ready to go back up hill)  Throughout most of the system i believe the track speed to be between 35-50 mph.

A typical 130 car dp'd coal train weighs in excess of 19000 tons (38,000,000 pounds 38 million)

A typical 6,000 foot long intermodal train (or freight train) will weigh around 3,500 tons.. maybe a little more for the freight.

    Hope that answers your question.

  2. A bit more detail; in North America; a typical four axle diesel electric locomotive wieghs between 220,000 and 280,000 pounds; a typical six axle diesel electric locomotive wieghs between 360,000 and 420,000 lbs.

  3. Fastest single Locomotive in the world is the Siemens Eurosprinter (which in testing did 357km/h)

Fastest train in Testing is the TGV at 350mph

Fastest Regular Train is the 218mph Siemens Velaro (The ICE 3)  the TGV is not far behind at 200mph

  4. Up to 350 km per hour in the moment (Spain). Those are regular rains on the high speed line Madrid to Barcelona, On the line Barcelona to Valencia up to 220 km/hour on the renewd older line. In soburb traffic up to 140 kim/hour

  5. most frieght engines can go 70 depending on the load iy carries or locomotives it has then the track speed limit

  6. This heavily depends on what you mean by "regular train".

Freight trains are much heavier than passenger trains but they go much slower too.

A long freight train weighs several thousand tons.

In many countries 'regular' intercity-passenger trains reach around 200 km/h (~125mph) and special high speed trains go well over 300 km/h (~185mph).

  7. It can vary as you may have already guessed by the answers.

When you look at a passing train, here are a few rough numbers to keep in mind.

Most road locomotives weigh very close to 400,000 pounds (200 tons)

An average empty car is 32 tons, average loaded freight cars are from 100 to 130 tons.

Much harder to get estimates for intermodal cars because even though they are loaded with trailers or containers, a lot of times the containers or containers will be empty so looking at one is impossible to get much of guess.

If you look at a 100 car grain or coal train you will be looking at around 12,000 to 13,000 tons.

Average speed is probably around 40 to 45 MPH.

It varies from company to company and traffic density, high speed lines are far more expensve to build and maintain. there are thousands of miles of secodnary and branch lines here that are operated at 25 MPH.

As stated the top freight speed (as far as I know) is 70 MPH.

  8. I guess other people have already answered your question. I just wanted to chime in and add that the fastest trains in the world are the "TGV" in France and the "Bullet Train" in Japan. Those two countries are in the lead right now for coolest train systems.

  9. union pacific "big boy"  steam loco is over one million pounds. put 150 loaded coal cars behind it and you have a train that can wiegh 20,000 tons at 35 mph+
