How heavy can an airplane bag be?

I'm going on an airplane tomorrow and I need to check if the bag that I am checking is too heavy. But I don't know how heavy it can be? what is the maximum weight for a bag that you are checking.

I would say that 25 pounds is not that much, more like 50 pounds. This is for intercontinental flights at least, and some airlines allow you 2 pieces of up to 50 pounds.

If you exceed the limit, a fee of about 50 Dollars for the next 20 pounds is usually involved. This is different per airline though, but this is what I found over the past years.

Expect higher prices now that the fuel prices go up.
