I have looked around the internet and found that I can build a fence 6 foot 6 between me and my neighbour withut getting planning permission. Question is, does trellis count as fence? Can i add trellis on top of the maximum fence height? What else can I do to build a shield between us higher than 6 foot 6?

  1. No 6ft 6in is the maximum for any kind of fence.  Until recently you could plant a hedge and let it grow higher, but now if it grows to more than 6ft 6in, your neighbour can insist you trim it.

  2. 6 foot 6 is the highest boundary you can put in between you and your neighbour.  It doesn't matter what it's made of.

  3. That's your maximum. Plant something tall like bamboo next to it if you want more privacy. But with your neighbours permission you can go higher - if he doesn't mind, how will planning ever find out?

  4. It depends on where you are located.

In some towns in my area, for example mandtae a 12 foot high fence around cell tower equipment.

I would call the local zoning official, rather than possibly go with general information from the internet.

And, get his answer in writing.

  5. 6ft fence then add 1ft trellis,thatsO.K.

  6. Beware of running bamboo.  They are very invasive and difficult to control.  If you don't care about that, they will grow to a tall hedge very quickly.

  7. Put the fence in ( 2mts) then put in conifer's, you can have these as high as you like!
