  1. 8,848 metres or 29,029 feet

  2. More than a century and a half after Mount Everest was declared the world's tallest peak, its exact height is in dispute.

In 1852, three years after field surveyors had measured the angle of its rise with a 24-inch theodolite, a telescopic instrument used for measuring horizontal and vertical angles, Bengali "computer" Radhanath Sikhdar first calculated the elevation of what was then known as Peak XV. Taking into account "the curvature of the earth, atmospheric refraction and plumb-line deflection," as author Jon Krakauer wrote, Sikhdar set the mountain's altitude at 29,002 feet above sea level.

More recently, Brad Washburn, the American geographer, mountain photographer and climber, produced a map of Everest for the National Geographic Society, giving it a height of 29,035 feet.

Meanwhile, the Chinese, who control the northern approach to the mountain, have started using 29,016 feet.

  3. 29,029 ft
