Question:

How high should I set my ceiling fans from the ground?

Hello,

We have 9 foot 9 inch ceilings in all of our rooms

and are trying to decide what size down-rod to buy for the fans.

We have a 1 year old that we do pick up a lot and don't want her to hit her head, but we also want to have the fan be the appropriate size for the room.

Thank you for any serious responses!

  1. You have to mount your ceiling fan on the ceiling.

The size between the floor and the ceiling is not important, you can also take a low profile ceiling fan if you have a low ceiling.

  2. We were going to fit these too but realised in time that we were in the habit of picking our toddler up, and thought it an unacceptable risk. Your ceiling are quite high though, you might be ok if you could fit them six say six inch down rods. But you should still take great care. Or better still wait till your 1 year old has grown out of the being picked up stage.

  3. I live in a hot country, and my fan is hanging from a metal hook - around 12 inches from the ceiling. To be quite honest, I find that to give a cooling effect, a normal oscillating fan is best - the ceiling fan will keep air moving a little, but never as well as a normal 16 inch oscilating fan around 4 feet high. You can move it too! and it cost half the price of the ceiling fan.

From the ground, you just need to hold your baby up and get someone else to judge how far up it needs to be - if I stand on my  bed, I can only just touch it, I need ladders to clean it (especially as I don't use it very often). Go with a nice pedestal fan - ceiling fans tend to be best in very large areas where you have trouble shifting the hot air that rises.

  4. Just use the downrod that comes with the fan. Any lower and the fan will be inefficient AND it could hurt someone.

  5. Typically head clearance for anything has been a minimum 6'-08" or higher.  If your ceilings are 9'-09" and you use a 2' down rod you'll be fine as long as a lighting feature, if applicable within your selections, doesn't cause the unit to fall below the 6'-08" rule.  The more space you can get between the blades and the ceiling will improve airflow. . . ceiling huggers, though sometimes the only option, are not very efficient.

  6. Generally they are about a foot from the ceiling in 8' rooms, but you could use the standard rod and get a longer pull cord.  Your fans will still work.

  7. get ceiling huggers.
