How high will my yearling grow?

Hello all,

I have a 12.2hh cob cross,(with god knows what) his dam is 14.3hh and his sire was 16.2hh. I`ve seen his half sister (who was born in the same month) and she had alot more feather and was taller.

When I went to see him he had winterd out, so looked fluffyer and more cobby, hes been with me 6 weeks and seems to have transformed into a lighter animal altogeather. (before and after pics to follow shortly).

Now i`m quite tall 5`8 and not skinny, I havent had the measuring tape out recently but I cant see a change (if anything hes shrinking lol) but on his passport as a bang on yearling (born in may) hes 12.2hh. What hight would you expect him to make?

  1. From his age and height already. I'd say he'll grow to be maybe 13.2-13.2 hh, but judging from his dam and sire I would guess about 14 hh.

  2. An old tale is if you measure from ground to sholder then turn tape up from sholder it should give you a idea of how tall it might be.  And it's said they grow till they are 5. Enjoy your horse!

  3. Its hard to say how tall a horse will grow It all depends on the bulit and everything.  He's a very cute horse but i dont think he's going to much taller the 13.2-14.2  thats about my guess of how tall hes going to get but i could be wrong because its very hard to guess the height that a horse is going to grow up to be because they grow according to their breed and if you dont know what breed the horse is its kinda hard to guarnteed any height.

  4. What a cutie!

The shrinkage you speak of may be from his hoof trim...he had an extra inch or two in excess horn in the before pics.

As far as size goes ( and I breed Draft crosses, so I know whereof I speak. ) at the age of one year you can estime mature height by measuring from the ergot ( back of the fetlock) to the elbow, and double it.Generally I use a string and go from ergot to elbow, then turn it up from the elbow, and the end of the string will be pretty close to what the yearlings mature height will be.

You've done a lovely job cleaning him up in the after pics...he  looks like a real gem (-:

And don't worry, he's rump high now, and that shows he is going through a growth period....as he matures he will fill out and probably regain his cobby appearance.

  5. here's the same answer i posted the first time you asked this question....

he's very nice looking, especially for a cross! however, i dont see him getting very tall. i think you'll be lucky if he finishes out at 15 hands. he looks quite a bit smaller than 12.2 in the pictures. at the MOST he'll finish at 15-15.1, but expect him to be closer in size to his dam around 14.3 it's always a gamble with horses... two 16 hand parents can (and often do) produce 14 hand offspring... tall parents don't always guarantee tall offspring. i think your boy is going to be more cob-like, short and wide

  6. It's very very hard to say... some types get their height very quickly (in the first 2 years) and then spend the next two years growing out, and their bodies catch up with the legs. Others grow more slowly, but tend to stay more in proportion than the ones who go straight up!

Generally I'd expect a 12.2h yearling to finish up around 13.1-2 - but I have M&Ms and they do tend to be tall looking yearlings. You could take an average of the parents' heights which would give you around 15.2-3, but I don't think that's going to happen, to be honest.

Get the stick on him again to be sure, and if you're worried about his development speak to your vet - and it wouldn't hurt to give one of the feed companies a ring, you may be able to give him a youngstock cube to boost him along if he's a bit poor.

    Your photos don't work.

  7. It all depends on the horse... I have a 15.3 AQHA crossed with my 13.1 Welsh... Their baby from 2006 is about 13.3HH right now.. the same cross but the 2007 baby is already 14HH as a yearling.. so you never can tell!
