How high would gas have to go before you make a significant lifestyle change?

In several weeks we have seen a dramatic drop in gas prices, and with more news coming as well as the start of the school year gas consumption may rise temporarily.

Luckily for me, In my community the a gallon of gas is 20 cents cheaper than the national average and is 3.54 a gallon. Still expensive, but I still see a lot of cars on the road.

We are starting to see changes in the way people go to work. A four day work week/school week, more people are biking to work.

For those of you who have not made a significant change, how far do you think gas will have to go in order for you you leave the car in the garage completely?

This isn't a don't ever drive your car question, just in case if you were confused by the tone. Myself, I think if gas came up to 4.50 a gallon that would be the end of me driving my car, even though it doesn't consume a whole lot to start.

  1. Gas here is 3.57/gal.  My car gets 28 mpg so I wouldn't save much getting a new car and I still owe on my current car.  I can't move closer to work because its 30 miles from the nearest city and there is no public transportation between work and the city.  My company doesn't do 4 day work weeks either.

I'm pretty much out of luck to change anything major.

  2. LOL  !!!! NOW BABY! I am selling my home in the country, as it is propane heat which is out of this world in cost! Moving closer to the city so I'm not driving back and forth!! Its crazy between what I pay in gasoline and propane for a house I only see in daylight during the spring/summer months!~
