how hot is tar when they lay it on the ground? or how hot does it need to be to melt?

  1. Since tar is a mixture of hydrocarbons, plus anything else the applier uses as a binder, the temperature could be anywhere up there.

    Methinks its hot enough to burn you.


  2. Road tar is essentially asphaltenes from coal (originally) and oil. As a mixture it has a softening point rather than a mp. Usable temperatures are in the range 45-80C. Normally not hot enough to do really bad burns but it could if heated like the folks who put it on roofs do so it still flows after 15-30 minutes.
