Hybrids can be more efficient than normal gas cars in city traffic because when the car slows down, it uses the energy of the wheels turning to drive a generator to charge a medium-sized battery.  This electrical power is then used to move the car when it starts up again.  In a conventional engine, when the car slows down the energy is wasted in heat by the brakes.

Hybrids also can use the electric motor and gas motor together, allowing the gas motor to be smaller and potentially operate in a more efficient range more of the time.
