  1. Since you are a first year student, you must be around 20 yrs now and full of dreams and ambitions. You have asked for a list of ingredients that can make you a great  famous man.

Firstly, not all great men are famous and vice versa. Somebody becomes great when he achieves or displays extraordinary qualities in a given sphere of life. He may be a great sports person or an outstanding singer. But these are spheres of limelight where there are adequate exposure and media hike. A person may also become great when he can attain a state of mind to live for others only or to give away everything for the cause of others and wanting nothing in return. There are soldiers who die for the country unnoticed, there are parents sacrificing everything for the  sake of happiness of their children, there are social workers working all the life for the distressed and looking for nothing in return. Are they not great because they could do something which we , ordinary persons could not do? They are great but not famous.Similarly there are famous persons, famous for their notoriety even, but they cannot be called great.

Secondly, to be great and famous to steal the lime light requires an ability of outstanding quantum. One has to be extremely talented, hard working and courageous also to achieve great hights. And one has to pay the price also, if you want to be famous and outstanding, you have to put up your very best and stand against all the odds that comes across.

Thirdly, the greatness of a human existence lies in the way he delivers and performs in a life time. If, as a humen being, he works honestly, lends a helping hand at people in distress, he leads a meaningful life, although he might not be  famous. It is more important to be a good person than to be a famous person. And all good persons are great persons.

Wishing all the best to a potential philosopher.

  2. Right now, I am tired and hungry, but my spirit is full of the purpose of my life. The reality is that, sometimes, I really do not even bother to know possibly be the purpose of my life, sometimes, just to be is sufficient for me to get along. I think it is the nature of life that it is better it is accepted as a potential, a potential for a life to be anything. This I believe it most powerful, but this power needs to be harnessed somehow. Then when we do not demand definition and explanations for everything, when we do not seek answers to all our questions of life, when we do not worry too much as what it would be like in the time to come, we learn to have faith in life, and come to life fully.

Then what truly is greatness? I often wonder myself. I often have sort of strange and queasy feelings myself when I think how easily some famous person could have been just about any other person, or even me. I often feel that oft times life is just be playful with us mere mortals, as to who to grant what and from who to take what. It appears to me that somehow, and for some strange reasons, it really does not matter at all if someone is very rich and someone else very poor. What really matters in life, I ask myself in my sense of wonder?

I understand this much that everyone cannot be great, or a great martial artist of the world, to be precise, or a scientist or a singer, there has to be certain few people to do have such distinctions, or else, there would be no distinctions at all, if all ever equally good and playing golf, or writing poetry.

I think the greatness we see in others is in fact ours to benefit, it is theirs only to enjoy. What more good, for instance, greatness could do to Mohammed Ali anymore, his greatness has already served him well, it is time for him to enjoy what he is, and it is time for us to benefit, instead of trying to enjoy, to get inspired and to see what a human beings can do and can be. The problem therefore starts when we do thing the other way round, i.e. when we see great people and try to enjoy instead of benefiting form them, getting inspired by them, when instead of trying to do something we resort to imaging a life we find impressively good.

As far as myself is concern. I have been hackled, hustled, and jostled in life by the ones who enjoy people going up, or coming down, who instead of taking courage to do the same themselves, try to hide behind other people. I see lives can be ruined and good wasted if you let your mind influenced by whims and fantasies of fame and fortune, power and prestige. What makes people great is not merely a talent, ability, or any number of people that they might gather around them, what makes people great is the power of their beliefs in them and in their world to be in a certain way. I leave you with this inspirational quote from the great man himself, Mohammed Ali:

‘Champions are not made in gyms. Champions are made by something that they have deep within them: a desire, a dream or a vision.’

  3. Greatness doesn't nessacerily mean good. Hitler and voldemort for example. Terrible but great (and yes i did get that line form Harry Potter movie 1)

You should be great either by killing your ruler and becoming supreme leader, or you could try and invent a new religion, like buddism, or agori

  4. Simple..to be a great human being, you just need to be, all you can be...

  5. Well it seems that the age of Renaissance find out where an individual could be great at many things is over. The examples you have cited concentrated their efforts in a single area first.

Therefore it would seem that you should find out where your aptitude lies. Then out of these areas pick one which appeals to you or make it appeal to you. Then keep improving yourself in this area. You may achieve greatness in a particular field or not. But at least you will be good at it.

As for becoming a great human being per se that is much harder to accomplish. Being a philosophy honours student is good start. But apply it to the world at large.

    Such as:

    - Do you want to be the logician who unequivocally proves the existence of God?

    - Or how about the political philosopher who brings about the 'perfect' state?

Unlikely as this seems it could happen. Question is could you dedicate your life to pursuing this goal without guarantees? Or would you rather be an academic? Though it has to said academics can be considered great by the population at large such as Stephen Hawking.

Thank you for such an interesting and stimulating question.

All the best in your quest for greatness.
