Safe Auto is pretty cheap but you have to notify the DMV of your state that you have changed auto insurance companies.  Safe Auto does not notify the DMV of the change in insurance carriers.  Other than that, I found that they were the cheapest auto insurance companies for me on an independent policy from my parents.  At the time, I had a truck, several speeding tickets, and I was under 25.  I was actually paying about $100 per month for liability insurance with 10 violations on my driving record.  At the time, I also had 4 points against my drivers license.
