i think if your working in the United Stated then you should know some of other languages but if you work some where like Mexico or Asia or even South America i think you should know the local languages.

probably not that important. I speak a second language and thought it would help me in my career but, surprisingly, no one cares.

It depends on what kind of engineering you do. If you're under a contract and work the others, a 2nd language could be useful since most engineers now are foreigners.

Nah, 2nd language isn't important, but it'll make you look impressive to your workers a tenfold and to other contractors who will want you.

Well, it was extremely helpful for my father, who is a retired civil engineer.

Pick up something which is widely spoken. I would suggest Spanish, French, or German. Spanish is widely spoken in many areas of the US, and in foreign countries, you will almost always run into someone who speaks either French or German, even if that is not the native language of the country in which you are working.

It isn't completely necessary, but it is very helpful, and can help you land jobs you might otherwise not get.
