Question:

How important is French etiquette in France?

I'm a high school student studying French and considering doing a year abroad in France in college. One thing I'm really worried about are French manners, and I want mine to be as good as possible before I go over there, so of course I'm going to do tons of preparation and read tons of books on the subject before I go.

My question is, I hear that the French are really insistent on manners at the table and such. Is this true? For example, if I make a mistake will I never be able to show my face in public again? And do you have any tips for me on French manners?

  1. Well French manners would be learning French and speaking it fluently or else they wouldn't respond to you. Also always say thank you and say hi to people you meet by hugging

  2. oh the french are like the canadians they dont get involved so it really does'nt matter.. just tell them youre from the states so you can eat any way you like .. they'll understand..

  3. haha no not really. I live in Belgium, they aren't any more worried about manners than any other people. It depends on family and social class too i suppose.

  4. Hmm I'm in middle school and I took French for 3 months (we had to)

The French teacher told us some stuff that I remember:

Never ask for ketchup (unless it's an American restaurant like McDonalds or Hard Rock Cafe, etc.) the people will be like "Ketchup?! KETCHUP?!"

Always hold on to your money. Get one of those things that goes around your neck. The French teacher said people in France take stuff, so hold on to everything precious.

I'm really sorry, I thought I knew more....

Well, I hoped what I did tell you helped.

  5. Etiquette is important in all places and countries, no matter where you go. If you get a book on etiquette then you will be set. There used to be one by Erma Bombeck. But try your library  and they will have a list of them that you can borrow.

  6. no

  7. If you will google the words "French etiquette" you will find many sites explaining what are considered good manners in France. Observe others and use common sense. If you make a mistake, smile and make a sincere little apology. They will of course forgive your mistake. Here's one to get started.
