  1. I disconnected the one in my car once, it had a top speed of 60mph after that, normally it would go 165mph.

    it was almost driveable.

if it breaks so that the intake or exhaust is blocked (and that is likely at some point if it was the oil, bearings or blow off valve that broke) then it will not run at all.

also if it is over pressuring your engine (as in the waste gate is stuck closed), it could melt or break your pistons in the engine very very quickly once the proper conditions happen.

  2. Yes.  You need to replace it.   The turbo is inline in the exhaust and needs to be working.  The engine is designed to have a working turbo, it is not just a plug in device.    It cannot be 'removed' either because you will need something there or the engine will blow up.

A dead turbo will do a few things.  1.  It will dramatically cut your MPG, because the exhaust will be clogged and the engine will run way to rich.   2.  It will probably not pass SMOG because it is so rich   3.   The exhaust will probably burn out because the heat will not be blown out.   4.  You will have no power in the engine.

Try some online stores, http://www.turbochargerpros.com has reasonable rates on them.  Most mechanics can replace them.

  3. Your word "Imperative"  then no, You can just remove it at a muffler shop. Then they can put your exhaust back together.  A turbo is just for high rpm performance, not imperative.

  4. Yes, you are going to have to replace it. I take it your car is just not driving right, or not at all. If it's not driving right, you are risking more damage to the engine. turbos are expensive, but that's the price you pay for performance.
