I agree with Chuck Uponya.  It is becoming much less important.  In modern society, I think it's much better that there is less of a "know your place" kind of feeling.  People should be able to be who they want to be, as long as it doesn't cause harm to another person/animal/etc.

Very important. As far as the vast majority of people go, we are stuck with the gender we are born with, and that is who you are in part. You dont have to be a stereotypical "manly man" or "girly girl", but do recognize that you are a man or a woman and take pride.

Very important I would say. Because we all need things like gender identification and race identification as bases to build the people we will become upon.

If it weren't for gender identification then there would be no feminists would there?

Not that I am ever going to justify feminism but rather to illustrate how important gender identification is regardless of what ignorant groups like feminists say.

Well, it's important to me.  I am a woman, and I take pride in that.  I don't have to fit the traditional gender stereotypes, however.  You are what you are - take pride in it.  I think gender identification is important on a personal level, but not on a political one.

If you are asking about identifying with one's own gender, I would say that it is rather unnecessary.  We all need to focus more on ourselves as people - all sharing this planet - rather than whether or not we are male or female and the differences between the two.

Not at all important. I know I'm a woman. Why should I want to force myself to behave in ways that people think I should just to prove it? Only people that are insecure in their own identity feel such a need.
