How important is it to save cultural sites and artefacts for the future?

As we see, a lot of cultural artefacts and sites are being destroyed either for industrial purposes or ignorance. Though these things are part of our heritage and there to show us who we are.

It is very important that we preserve and protect our historical past. At present I work on a French fur trading fort. It was covered by a dump in the past, but once it was rediscovered. we have, with the community, worked to discover it's history and preserve it for the future research. The community involvement is very important. If the local people are on your side in preservation, you are more likely to succeed.
