How important is the "name" of the Advertising or Graphic Design online college that I attend?

I was wondering what you thought...I am looking to further my educational background with an advanced degree or graduate certification program in advertising or graphic design. I really need to do this online as it would be easiest for me right now. I am really really struggling with choosing an online college...how important is the name of the school, i.e., The University of Phoenix vs. Savannah School of Art and Design? Or is it just the work in the portfolio that really matters. Does anyone have any suggestions of reputable schools offering these types of program online?

Thanks!

  1. The big names will have a network of companies that recruit their graduates/graduates working in big jobs/great companies. The only name I can provide is the Cleveland Institute of Art and I am not sure if they offer online programs ( go to google and put the school name in along with you tube and you can watch the award winning piece that introduces you to the school done by a great creative ad agency named Brokaw.).I do not know where you live but you could also try getting a list of the top marketing and advertising companies in your area and contact the Creative Directors to see if you can get an informational Interview to ask their advice on that. The Advertising Federation closest to you might be a good place to call to ask that question or to find names of people you can talk to.A portfolio is key to getting hired so you need to be at a school that will teach you the latest software and give you the opportunity to produce all different types of media that ad agencies work in including the internet.
