Question:

How important is water?

I drink coffee in the morning. I drink either soda or beer in the afternoons and evenings. I tend to not drink any water. I have a friend that tells me that water intake is so important and I need to drink some. Is this friend right that I need water or is it fine to just drink what I do daily?

  1. Beer will dehydrate you and soda contains empty calories.  Coffee is not as big a diuretic as once thought.

But you DO need to drink some water daily.....

  2. Popular  culture  is  loaded  with  myths  and  half-truths.  Most are

harmless. But when doctors start believing medical myths, perhaps it's

time  to  worry. In the British Medical Journal this week, researchers

looked  into  several  common  misconceptions,  one  of them being the

belief  that a person should drink eight glasses of water per day. "We

got fired up about this because we knew that physicians accepted these

beliefs  and  were  passing this information along to their patients,"

said  Dr.  Aaron  Carroll,  assistant  professor  of pediatrics at the

Indiana   University  School  of  Medicine.  "And  these  beliefs  are

frequently  cited  in  the  popular  media." Myth: You should drink at

least  eight  glasses  of  water  a  day.  Fact:  "There is no medical

evidence  to  suggest  that you need that much water," said Dr. Rachel

Vreeman,  a pediatrics research fellow at the university and co-author

of the journal article. Vreeman thinks this myth can be traced back to

a 1945 recommendation from the Nutrition Council that a person consume the  equivalent  of  8  glasses  (64  ounces) of fluid a day. Over the years, "fluid" turned to water. But fruits and vegetables, plus coffee and other liquids, count.

in short, you can drink whataver you want, as far as it luiquid and you calculate your liquid calorie intake.

  3. You friend is correct in my opinion. The beer will cause you to urinate thus losing water within your system. The intake of water above what you currently have will allow you to be hydrated and thus avoid a situation such as dehydration.

Example: During the college years people have the tendency to not drink or eat right due to their schedules and youth. This includes not drinking enough water but drinking beer, liquor, which can lead to dehydration if the person is not drinking water. Seen it many times including in self.

  4. dude your friend is right u should drink water u can be dehydrated and even cause harm to your body by not providing it water...u should a least consume about 8 glasses of water a day

  5. Your friend is right. Coffee is fine but you shouldn't ever drink soda and you should be drinking beer on rare occasions. Replace them with water.
