The TV stations will be turning off their old-fashioned transmitters for good, so if you use an antenna instead of cable or satellite you'll need a digital TV decoder box after February 17. Go to http://www.dtv2009.gov (note the .gov, it's an official web site) and apply for a $40-off coupon.

Otherwise, the cable and satellite companies have you covered, your regular cable box will work just fine with your regular TV for many more years.

A lot of people are confused by the upcoming changeover.  The new format will be all digital, vs. old analog broadcasting.  HD has absolutely nothing to do with the new format.  It will be several years before all channels switch over to HD.
