Question:

How ironic was K-Rod's blown save tonight?

This is why the save stat is so overrated.

K-Rod comes in for the Angels in the top of the 9th, up 4 runs with 2 outs and the tying run on deck for a save to pad his stats. And what happens? An error, 2-run single, 2-run double, and he blew the save!

K-Rod may have the most saves and be on pace to shatter the record, but he's not even close to the best closer in baseball. The save stat means very little other than how many chances his TEAM gives him.

Are you as sick as I am about hearing about his number of saves? The save is the most overrated stat in baseball!

  1. He's prolly outta gas that'll happen after saving all those other game...Look at Eric Gagne after he saved like what 80 straight games? He's a joke now and Bobby Thigpen wasn't any good after he set the single season save record.

  2. thats definitely not true.

you have to pitch a scoreless, pressure filled inning.

look at the cardinals.  If you got a save every time your team gave you won the cardinals would have a better record than the angels now.  They lead the majors in blown saves which shows how important it is to be able to get a save.

  3. it doesnt matter because the Angels still got the win.

  4. How exactly is the save stat THE MOST overrated one in baseball if that is the closer's job to go out and get the final out which is usually in a save situation? The guy has converted 45 out of 48 save opportunities with a 2.42 era before tonight's game. I think that outweighs the fact that he lost only 2 games on the season. You can't expect a closer to be perfect.

  5. no

  6. Pretty ironic.

  7. I'm not an Angel fan but for someone to say K-Rod is overrated need to really look at his stuff. Did you know he was a secret weapon in the Angels/Giants World Series? And who won that Series? The Angels. And he is known to have what everyone called a Slider from h**l. I had to see it to believe it. Irony and stat aside, K-Rod is a better closer because of his consistency, velocity, and control.

  8. Well, i do completely agree with you that K-rod is not the best closer currently in the MLB rite now.  I believe its Mariano Rivera.  He has no blown saves this year.  If the Yanks can have the lead after 8 innings, then they win the game.  Enough said about that.

But K-rod can't be denied of how good he is.  4th blown save today, and yes i do agree saves are overrated, but keep in mind the mentality a pitcher needs to be able to close out games.  Its not for all pitchers, and many fans dont realize this.  Theres a mental game applied too when you're trying to close out games.  Knowing that the crowd is on its feet and if you slip, then...booos..louder and much harsher than if you were to pitch in the 7th with the lead.

Saves are overrated to the extent that a guy like K-rod mite 45 saves in 49 chances, but if we were to give a guy like the A's Brad Ziegler who havent allowed a run this year in that situation, can we assume he will get 49 saves outta 49?  I doubt it.  The mental factor is very huge.

  9. i just posted an answer about how KROD is extremely overrated. the guy is having one of the worst seasons of his career, almost all of his number are up from previous seasons.

  10. yeah man, i AM sick of hearing about all of his saves.

the only reason he gets those saves is he's put in the save position so many more times than the other closers and lucks out most of the time.

yeah, he's good, but i still wouldnt rely on him too much

  11. No one is perfect, he's still the best closer in baseball. 42 out of 45 saves opportunities is still very good.

  12. top of 9th with two outs? and they had an error if that error didnt happen he would of save the game

All closer will blow a gam or two its normal.   No i rather here about him

    than mo

  13. He got the win so it doesn't matter

    and yes saves are overrated.

  14. Yes. I hate save oppurtunities. They were so exciting to me last year because Texas had been getting a lot of them before Gagne's career went to ****. CJ Wilson was pretty much lights out last year. He started off great this year then he slowly began to lose control and his consistency.  Theres times I'm hoping they bring in someone else in to close it because I don't feel safe with him in.

  15. So... so how is that ironic?

EDIT: Oh, now I see. It's about as ironic as a batter going in to hit the ball, but instead swinging and missing and striking out.
