  1. Well, one day, we will find ourselves on December 31, 2011, then midnight, and...

If you mean the Big 2012 Hoax Off, then you'd have to explain which lie you specifically refer to.

What triggered the choice of the date is the fact that the Long Count calendar comes to the end of a long count, and begins a new one.  The passage to the new long count (a.k.a. a new age) takes place on the December Solstice (not surprising since the common calendar -- the one actually used by the Mayans) started each year on the December solstice.

In our so-called Western civilization, we count our ages based on where the position of the March equinox is in relation to the constellations of the zodiac.  It changes every 2100 years (on average).  A little over 2000 years ago, we entered into the Age of Pisces (the fish) and this is now the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius.

New Age "scientists" (who are not really scientists, but rather astrologers) always make all kinds of weird predictions associated with new ages.  The Mayan new age is no exception.

It must be understood that the Mayan Long Count calendar is not coming to an end.  It simply moves on to the next count (they last a little over 5100 years).

Mayan astronomers (who did use the Long Count calendar) left writings describing astronomical events that will be seen from Earth after the year we call 2012.  They wrote the date using the Long Count calendar.  Obviously they expected neither the world nor their calendar to end.

Some other legends were artificially associated with 2012 even though they were not originally linked.  For example, the "creator" of the fictitious planet Nibiru had predicted its return for 2085 at the earliest -- the idea of Nibiru coming in 2012 is a recent invention.

However, most of the predictions are not even based on anything.  They are just outright lies made to create the Big 2012 Hoax Off.

Might as well be a contest to see who will come up with the most outlandish hoax.  It is like a Coca Cola ad gone bad:  the entire world is sitting around a camp fire and people are trying to come up with stories that will scare everybody else.

"I'd like to teach the world to fear, in perfect harmony...."

  2. one day at a time

  3. Like every other year: one day at a time.

Scientists don't expect anything out of the ordinary to happen in the year 2012, or specifically on the date December 21, other than the solstice, which happens every year.

None of the "predicted" happenings for 2012 hold up under close scrutiny. "Planet X" and "Nibiru" simply don't exist. The Mayan calendar ends a cycle, but there were no predictions of the end of the world. The Sun doesn't line up with the galactic centre; it's 6 degrees off. No asteroids or comets are actually predicted to hit Earth.

All of this stuff was put together by sensationalists in order to promote their books and TV shows, and shamelessly promoted by the History Channel. Don't take any of it seriously!

  4. what he said

  5. Well on 31/12/2011 the clock will go from 23:59:59 to 0:00 and 2012 will be there, it will be greeted with fireworks etc.

  6. It will occur at 12:00 am after the last day of December 2011, like every other new year. ;-)

  7. The headline appropriate for 2012 is: "Cosmic Mother Gives Birth to The First God."

The truth is the Maya civilization brought itself to extinction before they could start a new age on their calendar system due to what most scholars accept as, overpopulation and exhausted food resources to sustain their cultural needs. The Mayans DID NOT predict the world was going to end. Doomsayers really spin this out of proportion without knowing historical facts or about astronomy. No matter what conspiracy theorists want to believe, the truth is, the Mayan Long Calendar speaks of the end of one cycle of time moving into the next on December 21, 2012. I'm sure if their race would have survived, they would have continued their calendar.

Cosmology research into the nature of December 21, 2012, reveals that a rare celestial alignment culminates on this date; and amazingly, the Mayans knew this. What occurs here is an alignment between the galactic and solar planes. Specifically, the winter solstice sun will conjunct the Milky Way, which is the edge of our spinning galaxy as viewed from earth. Furthermore, the place where the sun meets the Milky Way is where the "dark-rift" in the Milky Way is. This a black ridge along the Milky Way caused by interstellar dust clouds. At dawn on the winter solstice of 2012, the sun will be  right in this dark-rift and the orientation is such that the Milky Way rims the horizon at all points around. Thus, the Milky Way "sits" on the earth, touching it at all points around, opening up the cosmic sky portal. The galactic and solar planes are thus aligned. "Sky portal" is just a term to describe the "opened sky" scenario apparent when the Milky Way rims the horizon. This is not to be confused with the "dark-rift" itself. Overall, the dark-rift is best understood as the birth canal of the Cosmic Mother. And the date of this alignment is, again, the end date of the 13-baktun Great Cycle - a cycle of approximately 5125 years. This all suggests that the ancient Maya were aware of the impending alignment and considered it to be of such importance to be a major transition point, the Creation of a new World Age.

So, for those of you still unconvinced and bound to mythological ideas better suited for Hollywood, if the Maya were so keen into predicting the future, one would come to theorize that they would have foreseen the demise of their own race and more than likely, prevented it from happening. Don’t ya think? And remember this small fact; the term "Apocalypse" as the Maya wrote it, literally means uncovering or revealing. This definition was understood, even at their time of writing.

  8. I'm pretty sure Quetzaquatl is going to return, so to prepare I'm going to brush up on my human sacrifice routine.  After all I  want to be on his good side when he comes. (He seems like the kind of god you don't want to cross).

  9. According to the Mayan calendar, thats when the world ends.

Others feel that it will occur immediately after 2011.

  10. Well, it will kind of appear immediately after 2011,  and hang around until the 31st December, when it will bow out to allow 2013 to take over.  Otherwise, it won't be that much different to any other year.

  11. nothing bad is going to happen on 2012

    so stop thinking  about it

  12. The Earth will make four more orbits around the sun and voila!

  13. I'll probably be pretty much sh|t-faced at midnight 12/31/11 when it starts, and pretty well sh|t-faced at midnight on 12/31/12 when it ends.

In between those two dates I plan on getting sh|t-faced as often as possible and pi$$ing off as many people as I can.

    Doug
