Al is actually donating a bunch of money to combat global warming. Like most big political figures, he gets paid for speeches n a variety of topics.

If I had to guess, he's probably making money indirectly off of speaking engagements and environmental work he has published.  Being that he's one of the current faces of the American environmental movement and an ex-VP, I'm sure he gets paid handsomely to speak for different events, especially with the attention environmental matters are getting these days.

Who's making the money?  Well, there's a big push these days to find cleaner ways to make the energy we need to sustain our standard of living.  Like any other industry, a lot of people can get rich if they get in on the ground floor.  Investors in green energy, entrepreneurs, and engineers can all make a nice buck off of the push toward green power.  Even communities can benefit, if jobs in green energy come to their region.
