  2. different licenses, different power outputs, different bands

  3. There are many 'wavelengths' to radio. These are controlled in this country by a government agency called the' Federal Communications Commission'.Some wavelengths are set aside for broadcasting in AM and FM and other frequencies. Others are set aside for Police,Fire and Emergency use.Still others are controlled for the use by 'HAM radio and amateur radio operators in 'two way' use.You are required to study and pass a test of proficiency in order to obtain a license issued by the the FCC before you can legally use this wavelengths.

HAM radios are fun and have a very real importance in times of emergencies. They can act as long range communicators even when cell phones and 'land lines' are down. They can communicate vital information when other forms of long distance communications fail.

  4. Ham radio is a medium individual operators use to communicate with one another. Normal radio is a medium a radio station uses to communicate with the masses. Internet analogy: Ham radio is like email or instant messaging, regular radio is like a website.
