According to many sources I have read Candle Stick is considered one of the coldest park in sports. I know they mean the weather because they say that the Giants (before moving to AT&T Park) had a machine that warmed the baseballs. Also prizes were giving away to fans who stayed at game that ran long such as button that said "I came, I saw, I survived." ! I don't understand. California is warm and many of the sources were talking about Candle Stick Park in the summer as well. I would think a state like Michigan or Wisconsin would have one of the coldest park but not California. You would think California would have one of the hottest parks! Does anyone understand why this is?

  1. It's between water and mountain like hills so it gets chilly and there's not much else around it to warm it up. It can get warm during the day, but when it gets later, it definitely cools down.

Also, the Bay Area is not exactly like So. Cal where the temperatures are higher. There are more microclimates around here, usually 10 degrees cooler in SF than in inland CC county.

And lastly, it's not called Candlestick anymore. It's Monster Park.

  2. Going off the park being next to San Francisco, yes, the colder currents keep the area cooler than others, even in the summer.  Add to that the famous San Fran fog, and you have chilly and CLAMMY.  That humidity makes a big difference in how cold everything feels.  They probably needed a ball warmer, simply to dry the darn things off!  According to Wiki, it also is in an unusual area that tends to gather a lot of wind.  Add to that the publicity of making it a "macho thing" to survive a game, and you have a reputation going.

A lot of the idea that Candlestick park is cold is probably also subjective.  "Boy this is colder than my area that doesn't get fog".

Now, I'm going to say something that will make me unpopular.  I lived in Southern/Central California for a year.  Costal Californians are wimps!  If the temperature deviated 10 degrees off 80, they complained endlessly!  At 70, it was "freezing" and at 90, it was "boiling".  Go on, refute, I've lived it, I know it, and I have people who will back me up.

  3. The park is right beside San Fran Bay and the coast.  The water temperature is chilly due to the Alaskan current which continually transports colder water down the west coast, thus air temperatures are held down a lot more than further inland.
