How is Ireland in October?

I know that their summer months are May-September, but we will be honeymooning in late October and want to go there so bad! Will the weather already be cold and rainy? What should we expect?

  1. Hiya, at the moment, it is raining in Ireland. In fact, it has been raining for about as long as I can remember. Even the outside of my house is beginning to wrinkle up like a child that has been in the bath too long. We have had the most awful summer. I packed away all my winter clothes the first week of June, and took them all out again the second week of June.

On a positive note, this means that we may very well have a decent autumn. It used to be that the first 2 weeks of September had some of the best weather of the year. This has been getting later and later. Last year, my gang even managed to hold an outside BBQ at Halloween (31 Oct) without getting wet or contracting pneumonia.

Expect the worst and you can only be pleasantly surprised. Bring waterproof overclothes and plenty of layers, rather than a winter coat and woolies. Woolen sweaters were not made for the Irish climate - you'll get wet once and catch your death. Keep in mind that the only Irish people who wear Aran sweaters are sailors looking for a swift death if they fall overboard. If you bring lots of lightweight layers, you'll be fine if the weather turns good (it happens occasionally). Don't bring an umbrella, unless it is your intention to kill or seriously maim yourself or others (rain isn't bad, wind is).

The countryside will still be pretty at that time of year - the trees should still have leaves and the whole place stays fairly green all year round.

Remember too that if it gets really bad, the only course of action is to find a nice cosy pub with an open turf fire and warm yourselves up with a hot whisky or seven. All the typical tourist traps are really pleasant in October, as no sane tourist visits at that time of year. There shouldn't be too many coachloads clogging the country lanes, it'll just be you and the locals, which is absolutely the best way to have it.

Have a wonderful honeymoon - check out some existing questions where myself and others have made recommendations for some things to do and see.
