How is Marxist anthropology different from other sorts of anthropological approaches?

Marxist and Marxian anthropologists use theoretical paradigms such as dialectical materialism, cultural materialism and critical theory to approach anthropological problems.  What this means is that they accept the value of at least some of Marx's ideas concerning the relationship between base (economy), structure (material culture, infrastructure and hegemony) and superstructure (ideational culture/ideology), and in some perspectives, they also accept Marx's ideas regarding social evolution (which is really not evolution at all, but rather, civilizationism).

    There is really a pretty great diversity under the umbrella of Marxist anthropology, so please do not take this or any other answer as anything more than a very general summary.
