I live here in Texas. My wife got a new job in Minot, ND in the next few months working for a oil company. She has her heart set on this new career up north. I like to get some information about how people live in the dead of winter up in the north. Thanks for answering.

  1. first congratulation for your wife's new career. Minot in winter could be

extremely cold when temperatures tend to be in the 10. I dont know exactly cause i do not live there, but i get this tips for your safety in winter.

  2. Like everything else, you get used to it!!  Your first winter in Minot is always memorable when you see temps like -30 and -60 with wind-chill.  Most people just stay inside when the temps are that bad and you will need an engine block heater for your car.  Most everywhere will have outlets to plug in your car so it doesn't freeze.  Lots of sweaters and a good winter coat are a must.  I would suggest waiting until you get here to buy a coat since most things in Texas won't be warm enough.  We don't get tons of snow (although now that I say that, we'll get feet) usually because it's too cold and dry to snow many days.  We'll get dumped on a  few times each winter and that snow will stay around and accumulate but generally once the roads are clear, they are ok to  drive on.  Try to get some experience on slick roads so you don't kill yourself (or others) the first time you get on snow covered roads.   Good Luck!

  3. The dead of winter in ND...that makes me laugh!

For starters, make sure your tires are good and your heat is working before winter.  Check your wiper blades too because those really make a difference with heavy snowfall.  When you park on a day it is snowing, if you have room that is, park so the sun faces your windshield (it saves your hand from carpel tunnel).  I would recommend investing in some good mittens/gloves from Scheels, a scarf, hat/ear muffs, and a couple pairs of long johns.  Yes, you heard me right, long johns.  And people will recommend CuddleDudds but they don't work as well when it is REALLY REALLY cold and windy.  Shoes/boots don't matter unless your trumping through lots of snow.  You may have to wear thicker socks.  My dad often wears a face mask but as a college student, I prefer my scarf.  Also, this is important, make sure you start your vehicle more than once a day so your gas doesn't solidify and make sure your not on empty.  I usually start my vehicle 20 min before heading out.  Many people up here have car starters and heated seats which are awesome.  The first snow usually ends up being around Halloween so you'll have some time to adjust slowly.

I live in Grand Forks, ND where I often times have to walk from one end of campus to another at the University of North Dakota.

I hope that helps you out and good luck with your expedition to the North Country.  It is great place to live and raise a family.  In addition, if you ever decide to come to Grand Forks, take in a UND Hockey game!!
