How is Monterrey, Mexico?

How are the people? Are there a lot of fun stuff for young adults to do? Is it safe, how is the crime rate? Is there poverty and drinkable water?

Can a young adult have fun there?

  1. Ok - let's get real... Bosque Magico is NOTHING like 6 Flags! It's a lot smaller. But it is still neat to go to. And, if you go around 3 PM, they open the gate between it and the zoo next door and you can get into the zoo for free! (Normal, typical zoo.) I have not been to Bioparque Estrella in YEARS! But, my sister-in-law just went and says they even have a few rides, now. When I went, It was just a safari ride to see the animals - the birds put on a cute show, though.

Crime rate is the same as in the USA - nothing different - so don't freak out. Take whatever precautions you feel you would take in your home town.

OK - poverty - there is, but, you should have heard my neighbors!!! Every once in a while, the government will give away land to people that are living in shacks. So, they would go down and live in these shacks for a few months to get this free land. Anything for a freebee! (Hey, can't say I didn't think about it!)

I've always drank the water, it is considered the cleanest in Mexico - but, whenever my family comes to visit, I buy bottled water for them (for the squeemish!) Tap water in Monterrey tastes just like the tap I drank in the US.

There are lots of things for a young adult! Many have already been mentioned. Normal stuff - malls, ice skating, bars, Carlos and Charlies, Applebee's, etc... Sight seeing - Cola de Caballo (waterfall), La Huasteca (beautiful land!), Grutas de Garcia (cavern), Alfa (it's like a cool museum  with the largest IMAX I have ever seen - extends to the ceiling), no end to museums and parks : A calm walk downtown for shopping at Morelo's, go to the History Museum nearby, it's next to the Governor's Mansion - on Tuesday's it's free.

If you need a tour guide - Call Las Aguilas Taxi's ask for driver #136. My father-in-law is the best!

Yes, we are super nice people!

Monterrey is one of the few places in Mexico that you can drink safe tap water. Actually the water of Monterrey has the quality certification ISO-14000, so it's even better than in many cities in the US. Monterrey is a very contrasting city, there are many modern places (like the rich San Pedro area) that look like a 1st world city and there is a lots of poverty in industrial areas in the north of the city.

Downtown Monterrey is beautiful, there are art museums, historic museums, an artificial river you can take boat rides, many night clubs and great bars and restaurants. Monterrey has short trip excursions to Villa de Santiago, a picturesque little town with a nice waterfall. Also, the Grutas de García caverns is a cool place to see.
