  1. The Odyssey has influenced modern language and culture. For example we call an odyssey a long and difficult journey or labor.

    We say that someone is  listening to mermaid songs when he is paying attention to false or dangerous  but attractive sayings. T. S  Eliot says in "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" : " I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each".

    We use the image of Penelope as a symbol of fidelity, and when we mention Penelope's shroud we refer to a never ending labor.
