How is a car able to show you what the temperature is outside?

I guess I was more interested in where it is than how it works.... Is it possible to be in the molding or the doors somewhere?

Apart from a temperature gauge there is also a tiny little man hidden behind the front grill of the car that reads the digital displays outside most banks.

Simple,there is a thermometer outside of your car that senses the temperature.

There is a thermocouple wire placed somewhere on the outside of the car,out of the winds stream. The thermocouple wire then sends a signal to the Gage. The sensor is probably in one of the side view mirrors. Since it is able to block the wind, and in older model cars like Caddys and Lincolns there was an analog thermometer built into the drivers side mirror.

there is probaly a sensor some where away from the engine so it doesnt pick up any of the engines heat. like near the rear of the vehicle

There would be a temperature gauge in the front of the car, somewhere in the bumper or away from the radiator. Then there is a wire running to the electronic temperature device.

sensors near the cars grille area,and protected from the heat transferred  from the engine components.etc. then routed to an electronic display inside the car .....its been done since the 1960's in some of your more elite cars and now most applications are considered standard equipment...............thanks for asking !!!!!

I don't know how Subaru does it but mine is pretty accurate.  If we can send people to the moon and clone sheep,  it shouldn't be any surprise they can read the temp of the outside of a car.

My subaru has a temperature sensor just inside the front grill area, its pretty accurate to unless your sitting in traffic on a 90 deg day then its off because of the high engine and exhaust heat in close proximity. once u start moving freely again it jumps to 1 deg within what the radio says it is.
