I need some enlightenment about what you think about this? Maybe in your own personal culture?

  1. well, when defining sub-, and counter- cultures, the type of music helps act as a flag, badge, of representation.  the kids listening to angry metal, well, they are most likely disenfranchised and angry at themselves and the world around them.  they pay attention to the lyrics and feed off the aggressive tendencies.  its an introverted affair.  its the spill over of emotions given words and an atmosphere.  but then there are hispanic natives who enjoy latin hip-hop, other styles.  its a style derivative of their ancestors, discussing issues, occurrences, joys, failures, they are familiar with, and find important.  how culture is reflected is through the 'singing' chosen, is the way they sing it, and how they tend to feel while doing it.  their rhythm, where and how they stress words.  sean paul and other reggae giants, use similar beats- all reggae rests on a similar base and relies mostly on what and how the subject matter is discussed.  there is a solidarity based on personal pride, but i think when it comes to most folk, including myself, its all subjective and has no specifics- no one style.  i enjoy songs that "speak" to me, remind me of harsh, and pleasant times in my life, or discuss things in terms ive written or thought.  its someone agreeing with you, exhibiting emotions you know intimately, in a style representative of how you want to feel, where you've been, where you're from.  pop music, albeit often discusses realistic issues, makes people simply feel good, and forget.  mindless bumbling bout materials and lazy summer days on the beach- puts you somewhere else for a few minutes.
