I'm a 16 year old girl who gets constipated easily. My mom scheduled an appt w/ my dr for a rectal exam. I would really appreciate it if someone could please tell me how a rectal exam is performed, so I wont be surprised

  1. They put a glove on and then they put a lubricant on their gloved finger.  Then they insert their gloved lubricated finger into your r****m and feel around.  It is a bit uncomfortable.  You will feel pressure.  If you have hemorrhoids you may feel some pain.  It only takes a few seconds to do the exam.  It isn't much to worry about.  Just a little uncomfortable.

  2. I doubt many physicians have the time or interest to come here.

Guess i will have to do for now.

He/she will place gloved finger of one hand into your r****m and probably place other hand at various places on your abdomen. It may feel cold because a lubricant is used. It will be uncomfortable, but not really painful.  May then use a speculum (a cold metal instrument) placed in r****m for more information.  That will be real uncomfortable - like passing  BM when you are very constipated.

The more relaxed you are, the less discomfort you will have.

As the finger or instrument is placed in you, take slow, deep breaths.
