How is an FPA different from a CPA?

I'm an entrepreneur and I'm getting killed in taxes. An associate of mine said to use an FPA instead of a CPA because an FPA can identify more deductions. Problem is, I can't seem to pry any FPA contact information from my associate and I'm having no luck searching the web for what an FPA is and how to find one.

What is an FPA? How do I find one? I'm in the Los Angeles/Orange County area of California, USA.

  1. I did a quick search and wonder if the designation has something to do with financial planning and the person was mistaken and it really is a AFP....an associate in financial planning.

I think you could shop around for an Enrolled Agent or a Certified Tax preparer to get good advice.  I am a CTP studying to be an EA and I am also a bookkeeper who can give advice to people regarding their taxes and what to give their accountant at year end.  Ask around for these kinds of people in your area....CPAs often don't spend the time advising.

Look also for Tax Planning services.
